G. Alfred “Al” Graves, 95, formerly of Minthorne St. died Sunday, May 29, in the Lutheran Home. His wife Anita (Bow) Graves died in 1987. He leaves many nieces and nephews, among them, George Lynch, Jr. of Worcester, David Lynch of West Boylston, William Lynch of Shrewsbury, Judith Shute of Worcester and Mary Cron of Auburn and many great-nieces and nephews. He was born in Alberton, Prince Edward Island, Canada, son of George A. and Mary (Burke) Graves. Three brothers and four sisters, predeceased him. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII with Patton’s 3rd Army, 465 Battery and was wounded in the Battle of the Bulge and awarded the Purple Heart and four battle stars.
Al was a florist in the Worcester Area for over 55 years and started his career at the former Lange’s Flower Shop and then owned and operated the former Sullivan’s Flower Shop and a Green House in Winchendon. He then worked for several years at Flowerland, retiring in 1975. He was a member of Saint Andrew the Apostle Church and founder of its Men’s Club, a life member of the Knights of Columbus, Alhambra Council #88, the Bishop O’Reilly Assembly, 4th Degree, the Disabled American Veterans, American Legion Post #5, and the Veterans of Foreign War.
The funeral will be held Wednesday, June 1, from Callahan and Fay Brothers Funeral Home, 61 Myrtle St. with a Mass at 11 a.m. in St. Andrew the Apostle Church, 5 Spaulding St. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery. A calling hour will be held from 9:30 to 10:30 on Wednesday, June 1 at the funeral home.
