WORCESTER- Alfred (Fred) E. Hevey, Jr., 85, passed away at home suddenly on December 16, 2022 after being stricken ill.
He was born in Southbridge on July 3, 1937, son of the late Alfred E. Sr., and Julia (Vitkus) Hevey and graduated from Notre Dame High School in 1956 where he served as Class President and captain of the basketball team. Settling in Southbridge, Fred married the “love of his life” Edwina J. Tardif who predeceased him in 2018.
Fred was employed for 37 years as a working leader, machinist and tool and gauge maker for Pratt & Whitney Company in East Hartford, CT, a job he loved to hate. He was an avid fly fisherman, and though he enjoyed fishing locally, it was the annual trip to the Miramichi River in New Brunswick, Canada that was the highlight of the year. There, he made many memories with his son, other family members and friends, and was so successful each year he earned the nickname “The Guru”. Following his retirement Fred and his wife, Edwina relocated to St. Petersburg, Florida where they resided for 22 years until he recently returned to Worcester. Fred was also an avid reader.
He leaves behind his son, Gregory P. Hevey and his wife, Rita, his daughter, Sharon Moriarty and her husband, Philip; grandchildren, Ashley Hevey, Chelsey (Hevey) Ezell and Rowan Moriarty; two great grandchildren; his sister, Judith Messenger; extended family and friends.
Besides his beloved wife, Fred was predeceased by his grandson, Brendan J. Moriarty in 2022 and his brother, Ron Hevey in 2019.
A celebration of Fred’s life will be held at a later date. The Callahan, Fay & Caswell Life Celebration Home, 61 Myrtle St., Worcester is assisting with arrangements.
