Alice M. (McBurney) Smith

July 30, 1923 — September 24, 2018

WEST BOYLSTON – Alice M. (McBurney) Smith, 95, formerly a resident of Mattapoisett for over 50 years, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, September 24, 2018 in the loving care of her daughter and family. She was born in Pawtucket, RI, a daughter of the late John F. McBurney, Sr. and Mary Elle (McKenna) McBurney.
Alice graduated from Emmanuel College in Boston and received her Master's Degree in Education from Rhode Island College. Alice spent a lifetime teaching. Whether it was raising her own children and teaching them valuable life lessons or as a teacher and special friend to her students at the Lincoln School in New Bedford, where she taught for 10 years, Alice had a powerful influence and made a lasting impact on their lives. Every one of her students brought joy to her, and she always remembered them in her daily prayers. While in Mattapoisett, Alice was a faithful and active member of Saint Anthony's Parish. She loved classic movies, was a voracious reader and had a wonderful green thumb in yard and gardens. Never one to sit still, Alice, along with her husband and family members loved to travel, and had visited Great Britain more than 20 times.
Her beloved husband of 52 years, Arthur A. Smith, Jr. died in 2002. She will be lovingly missed and forever remembered by her four children, Arthur A. "Tony" Smith and his wife, Rebecca Burke of Ames, Iowa, Andrew J. Smith and his wife, Cindy of Sudbury, Lisa M. Gillum and her husband, Craig of West Boylston, with whom she lived and Anne Marie Beemer and her husband, Ed of Mattapoisett; her seven grandchildren and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother, John F. McBurney, Jr. and her two sisters, Anne Burns and Mary McBurney. A special note of thanks to Notre Dame Hospice of Worcester and Amy Smith who brought joy and peace in her final days
Friends and relatives are invited to join Alice's family for a Mass of Christian Burial in celebration of Alice's life on Saturday, October 6th at 11:00 a.m. at Saint Joseph's Church, 74 Spring Street, Fairhaven. Burial will follow in St. Anthony's Cemetery, Mattapoisett. There are no visiting hours.
