Anne Scully Wettengel, a woman defined by her sharp wit, infectious humor, and legendary strength, passed away peacefully on April 13, 2026, in Worcester, MA, surrounded by family who were the center of her world. She leaves behind in love her husband, Phil Wettengel, children, Elizabeth Wettengel, Philip Wettengel Jr., and his fiancée, Hayley Comer. Anne is also survived by her brother, Timothy Scully Jr. of Glendale, CA, and her sister, Kathleen Chickson of Scranton, PA, eight nieces and nephews, too many cousins to count, and her Scranton girls. She was preceded in death by her brother, Steven Scully, and her parents, Timothy Scully and Miriam Pierce Scully.

Born on November 27, 1955, in Scranton, Pennsylvania, Anne’s vibrant leadership was evident early on as President of the Holy Club at Bishop Hannon High School and later as a Sociology graduate of the University of Scranton. She was a “Scrantonite” to her core and wore it on her sleeve with pride. She was a proud member of the Colonial Dames, which honored her family’s deep roots as early settlers of the United States. Her adventurous spirit eventually led her to Boston’s North End, where she was a die-hard Boston sports fan and developed a lifelong love for Regina’s Pizzeria and Galleria Umberto. During her distinguished career with Sheraton Starwood Hotels as Sales Manager for the International Luxury Collection, she traveled the world and built lifelong friendships across continents. After marrying Phil, the couple moved to Worcester, where Anne continued her work with Sheraton before launching her own international corporate events business. She later found deep purpose as the Program Director for the Women’s Initiative of the United Way of Central Massachusetts, where she fiercely advocated for young girls and gave them the tools to thrive as women in Worcester and beyond.

Thanksgiving holds a special place in the hearts of the Wettengel family. They celebrate with a traditional meal followed by games where “everyone’s a winner.” Most people went home with chachkies that Anne collected throughout the year and couldn’t wait to get out of her house. Thanksgiving also jump-started production at Anne’s annual Christmas cookie factory, where she made thousands of cookies and bought butter in bulk to get her through the holiday season. She was a magnet to those around her and lit up the room with her contagious laugh. Anne was always first on the dance floor whenever the opportunity presented itself, and a true lover of live music. Music filled the Wettengel house 12 months out of the year. Most fondly remembered is the month of March, when the house was filled with the sounds of The Clancey Brothers and Tommy Makem on repeat in honor of St. Patrick’s Day. She was exceptionally proud of her Irish heritage and enjoyed her visit to her family’s blacksmith shop in Donoughmore, County Cork.

Anne was diagnosed with Stage IV breast cancer in May 2016 and took the challenge in stride for nearly ten years. She became a tireless advocate for herself and others, refusing to let the disease define her. She was deeply connected to her care team at Dana Farber and was happy to call them friends. Despite many cancer treatments, she traveled the globe, attended weddings, and danced like nobody was watching with an unwavering strength that inspired all. Her nearly 40-year partnership with Phil was the heart of her life. As her health declined, he served as her dedicated caregiver and partner, and they pushed each other to fight the good fight. Anne spent summers in Belgrade Lakes, Maine and loved to share this special place with friends and family from all over. Belgrade became her second home where she found her daily peace kayaking, floating on the pontoon, and making elaborate meals for crowds where nobody ever left a stranger or without a to-go container. Anne will be laid to rest in Belgrade this summer in a private family sendoff on beloved Great Pond. Cancer may have been part of her story, but it never defined it. Her warmth, her laughter, her fierce love for the people around her lives on in every heart she filled. Her legacy is one of courage, joy, and a spirit that never stopped shining.

The family welcomes loved ones to Anne’s Celebration of Life on May 16, 2026, at 11:00 AM at The VUE in Worcester, MA.
