WORCESTER-Anthony W. Butkus, 92, died Sat., Jan. 27 at UMass Memorial Healthcare.
His wife Grace (Holt) Butkus died last year. He leaves his son, Anthony K. Butkus and his wife Nancy M. of Worcester, three daughters, Karen E. and her husband William F. Gearin of Paxton, Dianne J. Farrell and Philip Lee of Southboro, and Rosemary E. and her husband James M. McClune of Andover, six grandchildren, Daniel and Michael Butkus, Jennifer Gold, Lynn Farrell, Matthew McClune and Katie Stanton, two great grandsons, Jacob and Benjamin Gold, nieces and nephews. Two brothers, John and Steven Butkus predeceased him.
He was born in Worcester the son of Kazimeras and Anna (Snukstutie) Butkus and graduated from Commerce High School and attended Columbia University. Mr. Butkus was a wire splicer at American Steel & Wire and also owned and operated Butkus TV & Radio Repair Co., Inc. He was a member of St. Catherine of Sweden Church and served as a Lay Presider, Eucharistic Minister and was the oldest Altar Server in the Worcester Diocese retiring in 2005 at the age of 91. Anthony swam competitively and also taught swimming for the Worcester Boy's Club. He ran trips for U.S. Steel retirees for many years. He loved sailing in Buzzards Bay and spending summers at Swifts Beach in Wareham.
The funeral will be Tuesday, Jan. 30 from LINDQUIST LUNDIN FUNERAL HOME, 36 Butler St. with a Mass at 10:00 AM at St. Catherine of Sweden Church, 1 Wiser Ave. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Visiting hours will be Monday, Jan 29 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Catherine of Sweden Church, 1 Wiser Avenue, Worcester, MA 01607.
