BREWSTER-Arnold G. Sharp, 82, formerly of Worcester, died Saturday, September 3 in Cape Cod Hospital after an illness. He leaves his longtime friend Bernice E. Salmonsen of Brewster. He was born in Worcester the son of Axel G. and Hilma E. (Hedstrom) Sharp. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Reserve Midshipmen's School, Columbia University in 1945 and served as a Lieutenant during World War II in the pacific area. He received a BS in mechanical engineering from Tuft's University in 1946 and a MS from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in 1953 followed by postgraduate work in engineering mechanics at Northeastern University from 1962 to 1966.
Mr. Sharp was research assistant and research associate and most recently senior engineer at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. Prior to that he was an instructor at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, assistant professor at University of Massachusetts and lecturer at Lincoln College, Northeastern University. He also had a private consultant, engineering practice in stress analysis and structural design since 1947. He was a member of the Society for Experimental Mechanics, author or co-author of 25 technical reports and publications, and established U.S. Patent no. 3,433,202, "Impact Energized Sound Source." His research interests included underwater sound generators, fastening and joining methods, winch and winch drum design, deep submergence vehicle design, and oceanographic pressure vessel design.
There are no funeral services and burial in All Faith's Cemetery will be private. LINDQUIST LUNDIN FUNERAL HOME, 36 Butler Street, Worcester is directing arrangements.
