WORCESTER-Bernard M. Flanagan, 86, died Thursday, January 19 in UMASS Memorial Hospital. He leaves his wife of 52 years, Jean C. (Colihan) Flanagan, a son, Shawn M. Flanagan of Webster, a daughter, Sheila A. Burque and her husband Richard of Spencer, six grandchildren, David Burque and his wife Debra, Sgt. 1st Class, Jeremy Burque, US Army, Daniel Burque, Archie Suprenant and his wife Kerri, Heather Mancini and her husband Adam and Jonathan Suprenant, a nephew James McGrail and six great grandchildren.

He was born in Worcester, son of Martin J. and Margaret (Sweeney) Flanagan, graduated from Commerce High School and Worcester Junior College. He was a Navy combat veteran of World War II, received 14 battle stars and was discharged in 1945. He was named veteran of the year in 1988. Mr. Flanagan worked at Wyman Gordon in Grafton for 30 years retiring in 1982. He was a member of Christ the King Church, the Alhambra Council Knights of Columbus, Bishop O'Reilly 4th degree, Greendale, Christ the King Church Men's Club and the Boys Club. He was past commander and a life member of the Quinsigamond American Legion Post 318, past commander of the Worcester Veterans Council and chaplain for the Worcester County American Legion. He was also a member of the 40 & 8 DuMass, Voiture 1113 40 & 8 and the Worcester installing team.

The funeral will be held on Monday, January 23 from CALLAHAN & FAY BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 61 Myrtle Street with a Mass at 10:00 AM in Christ the King Church, 1052 Pleasant Street. Burial will be in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. Calling hours are Sunday, January 22 from 4 until 7 PM in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers donations may be sent to MA Veteran's Shelter, 69 Grove St., Worc., MA 01605 or the Quinsigamond American Legion 318, 180 Greenwood St., Worc., MA 01607.
