WEST BOYLSTON-David J. Cavan, MD, 89, of West Boylston, died Saturday, January 9 in UMASS Memorial Hospital. He leaves his wife of 64 years, Mildred (Dorr) Cavan; six children, son David J. Cavan, Jr. and his wife Karen of Holden and their children, John, Brian and Kathryn, daughter Maryellen Cavan of Littleton, NH., son Dennis Cavan of Worcester and his son Andrew, son Timothy F. Cavan and his wife Kathleen of West Boylston and their children Jennifer, Christopher, Danielle, Joseph, and Caitlin, daughter Ann Cavan of Newburyport, MA and daughter Susan J. Cavan of West Boylston. He also leaves nine great-grandchildren, a brother-in-law, Ronald Donahue and several nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by a son Daniel R. Cavan, Attorney of Washington, D.C. in 1990; three brothers, Edward J., John F. and Joseph D. Cavan; and a sister, Margaret (Cavan) Donahue.
He was born in Bradford, MA, the son of John A. and M. Louise (Coddaire) Cavan and graduated from St. James High School in Haverhill, MA. He later graduated from Boston College, Tufts Medical School and interned at Brighton Marine Hospital in Brighton, MA. Dr. Cavan was an Army Veteran of World War II. He served as Lieutenant at Cushing Veteran Administration Hospital.
Dr. Cavan started practice in 1950 at Worcester City Hospital and took his Boards in Radiology in 1951 in Atlantic City, NJ. He established the Radiology Clinic in Worcester and was Chief of Radiology at Worcester City Hospital. He was also associated with Holden Hospital, Fairlawn Hospital, Doctors Hospital, Clinton Hospital, Milford Hospital and Harrington Memorial Hospital in Southbridge. He was a member of Our Lady of Good Counsel Church.
At the request of the family, please gather at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, 111 Worcester Street, West Boylston at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, January 13 for the Funeral Mass. Burial will follow in Mt. Vernon Cemetery. Visiting hours are Tuesday, January 12 from 4-7 PM in FAY BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 1 West Boylston St., West Boylston. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, 111 Worcester St., West Boylston, MA 01583 or to a charity of the donor's choice.
