WORCESTER-David C. Whelan, 69, of 239 June Street, died Saturday, February 25 in UMASS Memorial Healthcare-Memorial Campus after a short illness. His wife of 39 years, Nancy E. (Rogers) Whelan died on July 14, 2000. He leaves two sons; David R. Whelan and his wife Jean Anne of Greenville, NH and Timothy R. Whelan and his wife Lisa of Charlton, a daughter; Mary Julie Whelan-True and her husband John True of Worcester, two sisters; Anne "Nancy" Whelan of Worcester and Mary Lou Keenan and her husband Richard of Halifax, seven grandchildren; Jonathan T. and Juliann E. True, both of Worcester, Maycie V., Connor P. and Keegan J. Whelan, all of Brookline, NH, Margaret E. and Kaitlyn M. Whelan both of Charlton. He was predeceased by a daughter, Elizabeth Anne Whelan on March 19, 1962 and a brother, Timothy J. Whelan on July 9, 1963.

He was born in Worcester, the son of Timothy F. and Mary D. (Clifford) Whelan, graduated from St. John's High School and earned a Bachelors Degree in Education and a Master of Education from Worcester State Teachers College. Mr. Whelan was a Worcester elementary school teacher for 35 years, retiring in 1994. Most of his teaching career was spent at Columbus Park School and Worcester Arts Magnet School. He was a drivers education instructor with the Central Mass Safety Council until the time of his death.

He was a longtime member of St. Charles Borromeo Church and most recently attended St. Peter's Church. He was a member of the Education Association of Worcester, National Education Association, Ancient Order of Hibernians, the Knights of Columbus and leaves many friends with the An Garda Siochana and the Mass. State Police. Dave was a long term surviving liver transplant patient who lived life to its fullest and was a loving grandfather to his seven grandchildren. He will be dearly missed.

The funeral will be held on Wednesday, March 1 from CALLAHAN & FAY BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 61 Myrtle Street, with a Mass at 10:00 AM in St. Peter's Church, 931 Main Street. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery. Visiting hours are Tuesday, February 28 from 2-4 and 7-9 PM in the funeral home.
