NASHVILLE, TN-Dean Page Whittier, 83, died Wednesday, May 29, 2019. He was born in Worcester, MA, son of the late G. Albert and Marion L. (Johnson) Whittier and was raised in Millbury, MA.
After his graduation from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst Dean earned his Master of Arts degree in Biology and Doctor of Philosophy degree in Biology from Harvard University. He was a professor at Virginia Polytechnic Institute for three years after which he was a professor at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN until he retired as Professor of Biological Sciences, Emeritus. He was a botanist and his research focused on the study of ferns.
Dean was an avid reader and a fan of all Boston sports teams. He especially enjoyed ice hockey.
Dean will be dearly missed by his wife of nearly 61 years, Virginia E. (Johnson) Whittier and children; Ethan Whittier of San Jose, CA and Karen Whittier of Nashville, TN. He also leaves a brother, Craig A. Whittier and his wife Barbara of Millbury, a niece, Beth Weidman and two nephews, Scott and Michael Whittier.
Funeral Services and burial will be in New Howard Cemetery, Sutton. Arrangements are in the care of Lindquist Lundin Funeral Home, 36 Butler Street, Worcester, MA.
