Donal J. Smith 81, of 11 Leslie Rd., a lifelong native of Worcester and long time resident of Vernon Hill, passed away Saturday, Aug. 28, in Saint Vincent Hospital at Worcester Medical Center, after a brief illness.
His wife of 51 years, Dorothy A. (Donnelly) Smith died in 1999. He leaves three sons, Len and his wife Kathleen of Holden, Timothy and his wife Martha of Londonderry, NH and Donal Jr. and his wife Janis of Worcester; eight grandchildren, one great grandson and a nephew. A daughter Joanne and two brothers, Rev. Leonard H. Smith and Warren Smith, predeceased him. He was born in Worcester, son of Leonard H. and Anne J. (Healy) Smith and graduated from St. John's High School. He was a Veteran of WWII and served in the Pacific Theatre as a radar operator for the U.S. Marines Corps. After the war he graduated from the College of the Holy Cross in 1949.
Mr. Smith worked in the oil industry for many years and retired from the U.S. Department of Energy in 1980 as an allocation and conservation specialist.
A Funeral will be held Wednesday, Sept.1, from FAY BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 9 Hammond St. with a Mass at 10 a.m. in Christ the King Church, 1052 Pleasant St. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery. Calling Hours are Tuesday, Aug. 31, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to, Lily of the Mohawks, The blessed Kateri Tekakwitha League, Auriesville, Newy York 12016.
