Dorothea F. Mahoney

WORCESTER-Dorothea F. (Smalley) Mahoney, died peacefully, Sunday, February 14 at the Jewish Healthcare Center. Her husband of 56 years, James M. Mahoney predeceased her in 2004. She leaves a son, Gregory R. Mahoney of Worcester; five daughters, Mary E. Braney of Spencer, Dorothea C. Mahoney of Worcester, Helen M. Mahoney West of Framingham, Jacquelyn F. Mushinsky of Charlton and Barbara M. Shea of Worcester; two sons-in-law, Paul J. Braney and Alan West; ten grandchildren, two great grandchildren and several nephews and nieces. She was predeceased by two sons, James M. Mahoney, Jr. and John H. Mahoney and two brothers, Harold R. and Donald C. Smalley.
She was born in Worcester, the daughter of Harold R. and Helen (Delaney) Smalley, graduated from South High School and University of Massachusetts in Amherst. She was a member of Our Lady of the Angels Church. In addition to raising her eight children she had a long career in 4-H. She started her career as a 4-H County Agent in Barnstable County. She piloted the Expanded Food and Nutrition Program in Worcester County for 4-H in 1970. As a 4-H volunteer she was one of the founders of 4-H Camp Marshall in Spencer. For 26 years, she was a Worcester County 4-H Extension Agent providing supervision of youth programs, retiring in 1988. She worked extensively with Camp Marshall, the 4-H County Fair, cookie sales, nutrition programs, 4-H clubs and the South Worcester Club at the South Worcester Neighborhood Center.
The funeral will be held on Saturday, February 20 from CALLAHAN & FAY BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 61 Myrtle Street, with a Mass at 10 AM in Our Lady of the Angels Church, 1222 Main St. Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery. Visiting hours are Friday, February 19 from 4-7 PM in the funeral home.
