WEST BOYLSTON-Dorothy L. (Friberg) Osterberg, 94, of West Boylston died Wednesday, August 5, 2015 at Rose Monahan Hospice Residence. Her husband of 52 years, Bertil H. Osterberg predeceased her in 1999. She is survived by a son, Steven C. Osterberg and his wife Nancy of West Boylston; daughter, Carol A. Rotti and her husband Howard of West Boylston; a brother, Richard Friberg and his wife Louise of South Miami, FL; four grandchildren, Travis Rotti and his wife Lori of W. Boylston, Christopher Rotti and his wife Christine McGroddy of Jamaica Plain, Paul Osterberg and his wife Katie of W. Boylston and Lisa (Osterberg) and her husband Jason Robertson of Shrewsbury; two great grandchildren, Nora and Liam; and two nieces, Beverly Cameron and Janet Jarret. A brother Harry Friberg predeceased her.


She was born in Auburn, daughter of Harry J. and Esther Gertrude (Weintraub) Friberg and graduated from Memorial School of Nursing. Dorothy was a Navy Veteran of World War II. She served as a Navy Nurse first at a Naval Hospital in New Orleans, Louisiana where she treated the sailors returning from the Philippines who had contracted contagious diseases such as Malaria. Dorothy also served as a Navy Nurse in the Navel Hospital in Glenwood Springs, Colorado where she treated the most critically injured sailors returning from the war. When Dorothy returned home from her naval service, she worked at Memorial Hospital and also part-time at Major Edward Elementary School. She was a member of the First Congregational Church, the Col. Timothy Bigelow Chapter of the Daughter's of the American Revolution and the Sister-in-Law Club. Dorothy also enjoyed needlework and fishing, but above all, Dorothy loved being a mother and grandmother, always putting her family first.


A Graveside Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, August 13 at Mt. Vernon Cemetery, Church Street, West Boylston. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Daughter's of the American Revolution, 140 Lincoln Street, Worcester, MA 01605 or to the Rose Monahan Hospice Home, 10 Judith Road, Worcester, MA 01602.
