WEST BOYLSTON-Dorothy A. (Mooney) Smith, 89, passed away Thursday, September 8 in UMASS Medical Center surrounded by her closest family.


Dorothy was born in Worcester, daughter of John P. and Dorothy A. (Bennett) Mooney and graduated from North High School. She resided in West Boylston the majority of her life until recent years when she was cared for in Worcester by her daughter Joy, grandchildren Joshua and Jovie and many loving caregivers. Her husband of 54 years, Donald E. Smith died in 2001. She leaves four children; eight grandchildren as well as great grandchildren .


Dorothy was a teller at Peoples Savings Bank, before retiring. She was a member and active in the outreach program at the First Congregational Church of West Boylston and played a crucial rule in sponsoring a family from Laos to come to America. She volunteered at John St. Baptist Church Soup kitchen on a regular basis, was active in the Beaman Oak Garden Club, 35 years of service to Montachusett Girl Scouts and the Western New England College fund raising committee, and served on the Town Bicentennial parade committee. She was a loving mother and grandmother and was fond of the saying "we will be there in the finals!".

A Private Memorial will be held to honor Dorothy and will be laid to rest in Hope Cemetery, Worcester. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the First Congregational Church, 26 Church St., West Boylston, 01583 or to the Girls Scout-Montachusett Council, 81 Gold Star Blvd., Worcester, 01606. Arrangements in the care of Fay Brothers Funeral Home, 1 West Boylston Street.
