Dr. Elizabeth "Betty" A. Mahan

Worcester

Dr. Elizabeth (Betty) A. Mahan, 93 passed away peacefully on April 13, 2025, at UMASS Medical Center in Worcester after a brief illness. She was daughter of Joseph and Helen (MacAvoy) Mahan of Auburn. Her Brother, Ken F. Mahan passed away last year.

After graduating from St. Peters High, she received her B.S in Education, “53”, and a Master’s in Education, “56” from Worcester State College. She worked as a Primary Grades teacher for the Worcester Public Schools followed by a year teaching Kindergarten in Pico-Rivera, California returning to teach, in the Public Schools and at Worcester State College. She went on to earn a Doctor of Education from Columbia University in 1970. Soon after she joined the faculty of Framingham State University, later retiring as Dean of the Early Childhood Education program.

She treasured her friends and enjoyed travelling around the world. She was an excellent golfer and has hit the links at many prestigious courses. She was a longtime member of the Worcester Art Museum, The Antiquarian Society and Tanglewood, where she enjoyed going to the summer concerts. She will be missed dearly.

She leaves behind her Nieces and Nephews, Thomas Mahan and his wife, Janice of Virginia, James K. Mahan and his wife, Sarah of Holden, Susan Brennan and her husband, Stephen of Worcester and Kenneth E. Mahan, husband of the late Helena Mahan, of Worcester, and many extended family members and friends. A very special thanks to all staff at St. Francis Rehab and Nursing Center and the staff at UMASS for the wonderful care she received.

Family and friends are welcomed to a celebration of Elizabeths life on Tuesday, April 15th at Callahan, Fay & Caswell Life Celebration Home, 61 Myrtle Street, Worcester from 5:00PM until 7:00PM. A funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, April 16th at St. Peter's Catholic Church, 929 Main Street, Worcester at 10:00 AM. Burial will follow in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. In Lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Mary F. Bond Scholarship at Framingham State University.
