Edward J. "Ted" Robbins

November 19, 1937 — October 15, 2021

JEFFERSON- Edward Johnson Coles "Ted" Robbins passed away October 15, 2021. He is survived by his best First Mate and wife of 61 years Linda (Baily) Robbins, children Virginia L., Elliott C., (Rebecca), E. West., and grandchildren Vanessa, Aiden, and Langdon.

After graduating from Phillips Exeter Academy (1955), Princeton University (1959), and University of Pennsylvania-Wharton School of Business (1961), Ted and Linda moved to the Worcester area where Ted worked at Norton Company, New England Research, and finally retiring from Washington Mills Abrasive Company as President in 2000.

Ted and his two sisters Posey and Molly grew up in Bryn Mawr, PA and spent many summers in Southwest Harbor, ME. He attended Camp Viking on Cape Cod. It was there that Ted developed a deep passion for the ocean and acquired superlative skills as a sailor. In 1959, he crewed on the Alphard in a Transatlantic Race. It would be 40 years later in 2000, Ted, at the helm of the Maine Lady, and Linda, with a crew, sailed from Rhode Island across to Norway. Then again in 2007, they crossed from Gibraltar to the Caribbean, and then on to Maine. Maine Lady was Ted and Linda's home away from home for many sunsets and wine on the deck. Ted was a long-standing member of the Ocean Cruising Club.

Ted was active in the Worcester community serving in various roles for Washburn House/Holy Trinity Nursing Home, Worcester Young Businessmen's Association, Worcester County Power Squadron, Ecotarium, and Tatnuck Country Club. He was an active fund raiser for Wachusett Greenways. He enjoyed a membership in the Argonauts and the Worcester Fireman's Society. Ted was a passionate and versatile athlete playing tennis, platform tennis, skiing, and driving Linda's golf cart.

Ted and Linda loved to explore the world and a favorite was Antarctica, watching the penguins build nests. His family imagines Ted is sitting on a rocky beach with an Emperor Penguin by his side and contemplating the weather for a sail tomorrow.
