WORCESTER- George F. Murphy, 78, of Falcon Street, passed away on Saturday, March 5th at his home following an illness.

He was born in Worcester on August 4, 1937 to the late Francis E. and Olive R. (Howarth) Murphy. He attended Sacred Heart School, Saint John's High School and graduated from The College of the Holy Cross in 1959. He then began a forty year career as an educator in the Auburn Public School System. In 1961 he earned his Masters of Arts degree from Worcester State College. George had a passion for teaching and enjoyed coaching various high school teams. He refereed soccer and basketball, umpired softball and was the timekeeper for soccer and basketball games at Auburn High School. When he wasn't involved in school activities, George enjoyed time away at their summer home in Old Orchard Beach, Maine. He was a member of the Alhambra Council %2388 Knights of Columbus and volunteered preparing tax returns for senior citizens at the Worcester Public Library and the Auburn Senior Center. He was active in and enjoyed traveling with the Greendale Retired Men's Club and also at St. John's Church, where he supported the Thanksgiving meal delivery program.

He will be missed by wife, Barbara L. (Devine) his sons, Richard G. Murphy and his wife Dr. Susan A., of Brentwood, NH; Robert F. Murphy and his wife Pamela B., of Auburn; daughter, Lori J. Murphy and her husband Dr. Gregory J. Young of Natick; five step children; nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Visiting hours will be on Monday, March 7th from 5:00pm until 8:00pm in the CALLAHAN-FAY & CASWELL FUNERAL HOME, 61 Myrtle St., Worcester. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30am on Tuesday, March 8th at St. John's Church, 44 Temple St., Worcester. Private burial will be at a later date in the parish cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the St. John's Food for the Poor Program, 44 Temple St., Worcester, MA 01604.
