George E. Nelson, Jr. (CMDR, USN Ret.) 75, formerly of Worcester died Friday Nov. 19 surrounded by his loving family at his home, after a courageous 3-year battle with cancer.

His wife Annette S. Nelson died in 1986. He leaves two sons, Jay Nelson of Richmond and Jeff Nelson of Virginia Beach; two daughters, Valerie Ragans of York County and Karen Taylor of Maryland; a sister, Patricia A. Shorey of Maine; his loving companion Joyce Faye White of Gloucester, VA and 9 grandchildren. Two sons, Wayne and Eric Nelson predeceased him.

He was born in Worcester son of Dr. and Mrs. George E. Nelson, Sr. After graduating from the Naval Academy in 1953, George dedicated 22 years of naval service to his country. He retired as Executive officer of the Yorktown Naval Weapons Station in 1977. After retirement, George joined Hogge Real Estate, working there from 1977 to the present. George served as a member of the Gloucester County Planning Commission from April 1997 until February 2001. He was a member of the Quinsigamond Untied Methodist Church, Worcester and later a member of Bethany United Methodist Church, Gloucester County, VA. At Bethany he enjoyed serving on committees and as a narrator at special church functions. He loved hunting and fishing and wildlife photography. He was a past president of the Abingdon Rotarian Club and was also a supporter and past board member of the Gloucester-Matthews Humane Society.

The funeral will be held Saturday, Dec. 4 at 10:00 a.m. in Quinsigamond United Methodist Church, 9 Stebbins St., Worcester. Burial will be in All Faith Cemetery, Worcester.
