George J. White

HOLDEN-George J. White, 92, of Holden, MA, a retired Certified Public Accountant and a veteran of World War II, died Thursday, April 2 in Knollwood Nursing Home after a brief illness. He leaves his wife of 26 years, Eileen F. (Kelliher Dolan) White and a brother, Harold P. White of No. Charleston, SC. He was born in Worcester, son of Peter J. and Mary T. (McNamara) White. He graduated from Classical High School in 1935, College of the Holy Cross in 1939 and Boston University Graduate School of Management with a Master of Business Administration Degree in 1941. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving from 1942 to 1946 and served in the Army Reserves until 1955. He graduated from the Counter Intelligence Corps Advanced School in Chicago, Illinois in 1943.
He was employed by Baker & Baker, a CPA Firm in Worcester from 1946 to 1951 at which time he established his own CPA Firm in Worcester. He retired from active practice in 1988. He was a former member of the Board of Trustees, St. Camillus Hospital, Whitinsville, MA and a former member of the Board of Directors, St. Camillus Institute, Whitinsville. He was a former Incorporator of St. Vincent Hospital and a former Chairman of the Audit Committee at St. Vincent Hospital.
At the College of the Holy Cross, he was a member of the Alumni Association, a Charter member of the President's Council, a lifetime member of the Benefactor's Circle, a member of the 1843 Society, a member of Cornerstone, a member of the Order of Purple Knights and Chairman of the Class of 1939. In 1998, he received the In Hoc Signo Award, the General Alumni Associations highest honor at the College of the Holy Cross.
He was a member of the Boston University Alumni Association. He was a member of Alhambra Council, Knights of Columbus 3rd degree and the Bishop O'Reilly Assembly, Knights of Columbus 4th degree, St. George's Church, the Catholic Alumni Sodality of Worcester County, the Worcester Country Club, the Greendale Retired Men's Club, the Military Officers Association of America, and the Vernon Hill Post 435, American Legion. He was a member of the Massachusetts Society of Public Accountants and American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. In 1954, he taught advanced accounting at Clark University and in 1977, he taught accounting at the College of the Holy Cross.
The funeral will be held on Monday, April 6 from CALLAHAN & FAY BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 61 Myrtle St., Worcester with a Mass at 10:00 AM in St. George's Church, 38 Brattle Street. Interment will be in Saint John's Cemetery. Visiting hours are Sunday, April 5 from 2-5 PM in the funeral home. The Holy Cross Sodality will meet at 4:00 PM to conduct their ritual.
