Gordon A. Cherry, Jr., 78, of Worcester died Saturday, November 14 at home, surrounded by his family.
He leaves his wife of 55 years, Marie A. (Cotter) Cherry; four children, Kathleen M. Cherry of Worcester, Christopher P. Cherry and his wife, Sandra of Stafford, VA, Patrick J. Cherry and his wife, Ellen of Worcester and Paul A. Cherry and his wife, Lori of Millbury; twelve grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Patrick, Colleen and Maureen Maloney, Margaret, Justin, Brittney, Brennan, Kailey, Makenna, Jonathan and Emerson Cherry and nieces and nephews. Two sisters, Muriel Bergeron and Janet Solaperto predeceased him. He was born in Worcester, son of Gordon A. Cherry, Sr. and Mary M. (Murphy) Cherry, graduated from Commerce High School and attended Quinsigamond Community College and Clark University. He was a Korean War Veteran serving as a Sergeant in the United States Marine Corp.
Gordon was a Police Officer for the City of Worcester Police Department for 38 years, retiring as a Detective in 1995. He was a member of the Massachusetts Police Assoc., the Retired State, County and Municipal Employees Assoc. of Massachusetts, the Worcester Retired Police and Firefighters Assoc., the Worcester Police Department Emerald Society, the Vernon Hill American Legion Post %23435, Chapter 4 Disabled American Veterans, the Knights of Columbus, Alhambra Council %2388, and Our Lady of Lourdes Church. He was the former vice president of the Worcester Police Union and was a former coach for the Jack Barry Little League.
The family would like to thank Dr. William Walsh and the UMASS Oncology Clinic staff and the UMASS Hospice.
The funeral will be held Wednesday, November 18, from CALLAHAN & FAY BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 61 Myrtle St. with a Mass at 10 AM in Our Lady of the Lourdes Church, 1290 Grafton St. Burial will be in Saint John's Cemetery. Visiting Hours are Tuesday, November 17, from 4 to 8 PM at the funeral home.
