WORCESTER- Hazel G. Bates, 92, passed away peacefully on April 28, 2018 in her home.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Alan P. Hedstrom and her second husband, Freddie E. Bates.
She was born in Worcester on March 5, 1926 a daughter of the late Carl M. Brote and Helga H. (Nelson) Brote. Mrs. Bates attended local schools and graduated from Commerce High School in 1944. She held various jobs throughout her life including working as a bookkeeping clerk at Nelson's Ice and Oil Co. and Elwood's Hardware and Morgan Linen Service. She also waitressed at Newberry's Five & Dime. Later she worked at Norton Company where she learned I.B.M. punch card system which she went on to be the first woman to teach this new system in Worcester. Later, she worked for ARCO in Texas a main trouble shooter technician for their computers.
Mrs. Bates was active in the Girl Scouts as a Scout Leader for over 20 years and in her free time enjoyed reading, especially on her Mr. Kindle as she called it. Hazel was an adventure her whole life!
She leaves behind her loving children Donna L. Latino and her husband, Robert; and
Christopher A. Hedstrom and his wife, Lori; a daughter in law, Diane Hedstrom; nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren and many extended family members in Texas.
Besides her parents and her husbands, Hazel is predeceased by a son, Glen A. Hedstrom and a sister, Nancy J. Copeland.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate her life at 11:30am on Friday, May 11th at a graveside service at All Faith Cemetery, 7 Island Rd., Worcester.
