James Paul Grella, 33, of Worcester (formerly Canton), Mass; passed away on April 28, 2026 surrounded by family.
James attended UMass Dartmouth, where he met his wife, Anne, and formed many friendships that would last a lifetime. James was the kind of person who made life brighter and louder in the best way. He lived to make people laugh, was a true trivia wizard, and never backed down from a debate—especially if he knew he was right (which, according to him, was often). His humor, confidence, and energy left a lasting mark on everyone who knew him. He had a deep love for golf and spent as much time as he could on the course. He loved being outside and working on bettering his swing. He was also a devoted karaoke enthusiast, always ready to grab a mic and turn any night into something unforgettable. He found wonder in the night sky and the cosmos—chasing stars, planets, eclipses, and beyond with curiosity and awe. James was passionate about cars and was a trusted advisor to friends and family when it came to picking out their next vehicle.
He was driven in everything he pursued. He became a real estate investor, proudly purchasing his first multifamily home with Anne, and was excited about building a future with his family. He had an insatiable curiosity and a drive to learn that showed up in all parts of his life. Whether it was teaching himself how to repair his cars or fully gutting and renovating the bathroom in his new home, it might have taken him three times longer but he approached each challenge with determination, patience and pride. He found joy in figuring things out on his own.
Summers on Cape Cod were especially meaningful to him, and he looked forward to many more, watching his son and nieces growing up together by the water as he did. Above all, James loved his son, Jack, and took pride in being the best dad he could be for him. He and Anne were true partners, and together they built a life grounded in love, laughter, and deep connection.
He leaves behind his beloved wife, Anne, and their son, Jack; his mother, Patricia and her partner Pete; his father, Paul; his sisters, Catherine and her husband Kyle Camp; Elizabeth, Sarah, and Margaret; and his brother, Robert. As well as his loving in-laws Jim and Joanne Leighton, Emily Leighton, James and Kelsey Leighton. He was a proud uncle to Claire, Grace, Malcolm, Noah, and Jimmy who he loved dearly. He also leaves behind several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was deeply loved by his friends, who were an important and constant part of his life. He will be missed beyond words by his family, friends, and all who knew him.
In his final act of generosity, James donated his organs, giving the gift of life to others—an act that reflects the depth of his character and the way he showed up for the world.
He will be forever loved, deeply missed, and never forgotten. May his stories be told often, his laughter remembered always, and his spirit live on in the lives he touched. In lieu of flowers, please consider registering as an organ donor in James’s honor and giving the gift of life to others.
