WORCESTER – James Hemans Hammond, 89, passed away on May 1, 2019 at UMass Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Accra, Ghana, son of the late Daniel Branford Hammond andTanoe Amuzuah. He was the sixth child and the third male son of his parents. He is survived by his beloved wife Rosamond (Grant) Hammond and eight children; Letitia A.Hammond of London, England; Rosamond A. Hammond of London, England; Matilda Hammond-Raney of Worcester, MA; Georgina S. Hammond of London, England; Kwaw Hammond of London, England; Alberta Hammond of Accra, Ghana; Lawrence Hammond of Worcester, MA; Yvonne C. Hammond of London, England and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, grandchildren and great grandchildren in Ghana, England and in the United States.
Mr. Hammond was a Headmaster and taught in the Ghana school service for many years. He retired as a principal at the Methodist Middle School in Half Assini. During retirement, he travelled around the world with his darling wife Rosamond, visiting their children at their various residences across the world. He was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church in Worcester, MA. He loved the LORD with all his heart, soul and mind. He was also an avid player of the game "Checkers" of which he enjoyed passionately. He will be sorely missed and fondly remembered by everyone who had the honor to cross paths with him.
The family vigil, burial service, memorial and thanksgiving service will take place in his hometown of Half-Assini in Ghana at a later date.
