Holden – James J. Powers 65, passed away suddenly on Friday, July 28th at UMass Medical Center.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Candy (Morley) Powers, two children, Ashley Powers of Harwich Port and Patrick Powers of Holden; three siblings, Francis Powers and his wife, Sandy of West Boylston, David Powers and his wife, Margaret of Worcester and Kathleen Powers of Worcester. He will be remembered by many nieces and nephews, as well as their children, who lovingly referred to him as “Uncle Meatball”. He was born in Worcester, son of Francis and Catherine (Griffin) Powers. He graduated from Burncoat High School and attended Worcester State College.
A sales representative for many years, Jimmy worked for management waste companies, as well as MillBrook Distributors. Throughout the years, Jimmy also enjoyed working part time as a carpenter and a house painter.
Golfing, playing poker and taking long walks with his wife were among his most cherished activities. His dry sense of humor and love of prank phone calls will hold him in the memories of many for years to come. He loved cooking for his family as well as coaching his kids in soccer and football. His love for his dogs Diesel, Gabby, and Yogi, was unmatched.
Jimmy could often be found in his leather chair watching New England sports on TV, especially the Patriots. He loved to follow the stock market and was readily available to guide friends and family in making financial decisions. Jimmy’s true happy place was at his cottage in West Harwich. Nothing could top a day with his family, sitting in his “spot” on Pleasant Road Beach with a cold Cape Cod Blonde Ale.
After an accident left him with a spinal cord injury in 2008, he became a strong advocate for the cause. Courageous throughout his fifteen year battle, he faced the many obstacles with unbelievable grace and strength. Jimmy was the best husband, father, brother and friend who was always there to help and put smiles on the faces of those he knew. Jimmy’s unexpected passing will leave a hole in our hearts that will take forever to fill.
