BOYLSTON: Joan M. (Lannan) McGovern, loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, 93, formerly of Shrewsbury St., Boylston. Passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Monday, November 20, 2023
Her husband, William F. McGovern, Jr., died in 1992. She leaves four children: Brian F. McGovern and his wife, Ellen of Shrewsbury; Mary L. McDonald and her husband, Thomas of Hudson; Ann M. Guerard and her partner Paul Dansereau of Charlton; and Maureen F. Sawyer and her husband, Robert of Hudson: seventeen grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Three children, William F. McGovern, III. Ellen M. McGovern and Robert J. McGovern predeceased her. She was born in Lawrence, daughter of George F. and Loretta (Naughton) Lannan and has lived in Boylston since 1969. She graduated with her RN from St. John's School of Nursing, Lowell. Later, she graduated with her bachelor's in nursing from Worcester State College and received her master's degree in nursing education from Anna Maria College.
After many years as a homemaker, Joan resumed her nursing career at Assumption College; she then worked at Memorial and UMASS hospitals in Worcester before becoming an Instructor in the Nursing Programs at Hahnemann Hospital and Becker College before retiring. She was a parishioner of St. Mary of the Hills Church, the Boylston Senior Council, and the Red Hat Society member.
A Funeral Mass will be held Monday, November 27, at 10 am in St. Mary of the Hills Church, 630 Cross St. Boylston. A burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery, Boylston. Visiting hours are 2 to 4 on Sunday, November 26 in Fay Brothers Life Celebration Home, 1 West Boylston St., West Boylston. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Mary of the Hills Church, Boylston, or Alzheimer's Association.
