Shrewsbury - Mr. John J. Campanale, of Brewster, formerly of Shrewsbury, died Sunday, February 11, 2007. He was 86.
His wife, Jennie A. (Pagano) Campanale died in 1997. He leaves his children, John P., of Brewster, Peter A., of Half Moon Bay, California, Leonard M. of South Dennis, Frank M., of Boston, Beatrice S. Goudey of Dunstable and Jennie L. Cysyk of Plymouth, Vermont; a sister, Frances Fanelli of Shrewsbury; three grandchildren, Nicole Campanale, Devin and Katie Goudey; many nieces & nephews. A son, Joseph F. Campanale died in 1973. John was born October 13, 1920 a son to the late Peter and Beatrice (Cariglia) Campanale and was one of four children.
He was a Marine Corps Veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict. Commissioned as a First Lieutenant in The U.S. Marines in 1943 he participated in the Pacific Theater of operations with the 2nd Marine Division and in the battles for Saipan and Okinawa. He was assigned to The Marine intelligence branch toward the end of the war and was stationed at Nagasaki Japan soon after the A-bomb was dropped.
He was a 1938 graduate of Commerce High School. Upon graduation he was admitted to The College of The Holy Cross on a full athletic scholarship. He held many local and regional track records, both in high school and college, some of which were not broken until the 1970s. His specialty was the 440. John maintained membership in the Holy Cross College Men%C3%A2%E2%82%AC%E2%84%A2s Sodality and Alumni Association. He was also active in the local Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
An educator for over 38 years, he was an English teacher at North High School in Worcester where he was the track and field coach. He also taught at the former Worcester Junior College, retiring in 1983.
A Memorial Mass in celebration of John%C3%A2%E2%82%AC%E2%84%A2s life will be held Saturday, Feb. 17 at 9:30AM in The Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, 24 Mulberry Street, Worcester. Relatives and friends respectfully invited to attend. There are no visiting hours and burial will be private.
