John J. Curran 96, of 36 Curtis Pkwy. died Wednesday, March 31, at UMASS Memorial Hospital, after an illness.

His wife of 52 years, Mary F. (Stowe) Curran died in 1998. He leaves two sons, John J. Curran Jr. of West Boylston and Brian J. Curran of Oxford; two daughters, Kathleen Curran of Marietta, GA and Judy C. Kane of Auburn, a sister; Ann Coppola of Worcester, nine grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. A brother, Francis Curran predeceased him. He was born in Waterbury, CT son of Cornelius and Nora (Moran) Curran and lived 27 years in Leicester before returning here 20 years ago. He graduated from Classical High School and the New England School of Accounting.

John was an Army Veteran of WWII, serving with the Combat Engineers, 3rd Army and seeing action in the battles of Ardennes, Italy; Central Europe; Northern France; and the Rhineland.

Mr. Curran was the Town Accountant for Leicester for 15 years, prior to that he worked as an Insurance Agent for 35 years for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company.

He was a member of Our Lady of the Angels Church and was active in the Bishop Fund for 20 years. He served on the board of directors and was treasurer of the Regional II Area Agency on Aging, former chairman of the Leicester Democratic Town Committee, member and treasurer of the Leicester Lions Club for 10 years, member of the Veterans of Foreign War Post %23479, Disabled Veterans Chapter %234, Worcester Lodge of Elks %23243, the AARP, Massachusetts Retired County and Municipal Employees Assoc., and the Home Care board of directors and finance committee.

A Funeral will be held Saturday, April 3, from FAY BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 9 Hammond St. with a Mass at Noon in Our Lady of the Angels Church, 1222 Main St. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery. Calling Hours are Friday, April 2, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
