WORCESTER- John D. "Jack" Hughes, Jr., 96, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 24, 2019 at Jewish Healthcare Center.
He was the husband of the late Adrienne (Berberian) Hughes who died in 2001.
Jack was born in Worcester on December 29, 1922, the son of the late John D. and Alice (Maher) Hughes. He grew up on both Bay State Road and Montvale Road in Worcester and attended local schools. He went on to attend North High before graduating from St. John's Prep.
Following his graduation from high school, Jack enrolled at Boston College but then enlisted in the United States Army during his sophomore year where he proudly served his country during World War II. During the war, he was stationed first at Luzon, The Philippines and then Osaka,
Japan.
Following the end of the war, Jack returned to Boston College and earned his bachelor's degree. He then pursued his education by earning a master's degree in Business Administration from Harvard Business School.
Jack married Adrienne Berberian in 1948 and together they had three children. For approximately 30 years, Jack was the owner of Mark, Inc., a men's clothing store located at 330 Main Street in Worcester. During this period, Jack held positions with several Worcester business groups including the Chamber of Commerce and the Downtown Merchants Association.
In 1980, he began his second career as an instructor in business administration courses at several Worcester area colleges including Worcester State, Quinsigamond and Mount Wachusett Community College. Jack was appointed to the position of Assistant Professor of Business Administration at Mount Wachusett, a position he held until his retirement in 2002.
He leaves behind his loving children, John D. Hughes, III., and his wife, Linda of Saunderstown, RI., Paul S. Hughes and his wife, Susan B., of Wellesley and Lisa Hughes Gaffney and her husband Thomas E. of Brookline; his grandchildren, Adrienne and Johnny Gaffney, both of New York City and Peter S. and Elizabeth L. Hughes, both of Wellesley; a sister-in-law, Miriam Berberian of Worcester; a nephew, Mark B. Constantian, M.D., of Hollis, NH, and Carol C. Lazell of Arlington; many extended family members.
Family and friends will gather to celebrate Jack's life on Monday July 29th from 11:00am until 12:30pm at the Callahan, Fay & Caswell Life Celebration Home, 61 Myrtle St., Worcester. A funeral service will follow in the funeral home. Burial will be at Rural Cemetery alongside his wife.
