John J. "Jay" Eager

John J. "Jay" Eager, 66, of Worcester passed away Monday, March 2nd at UMASS Memorial Medical Center.

Jay was born in Worcester, son of John F. and Paula F. (Lucason) Eager and graduated from Saint John's High School and Anna Maria College.

Jay began his 36-year long career with the City of Worcester Police Department in 1978, working many years in the detective bureau before retiring as a Sector Sergeant of Operations in 2014.

Jay's lifelong and distinguished scouting career began in 1964 when he joined Boy Scouts, first in Troop 28 of Worcester, and then to his home of Troop 37 of Worcester. He was soon honored with being tapped out into the Order of the Arrow Pakachoag Lodge 525 in 1967, then becoming a Brotherhood member in 1968 and a Vigil member in 2017. Jay passed his Eagle Scout board of review in 1968, honoring him as the third Eagle Scout in Troop 37 of Worcester. He took pride in being active on the Pakachoag Lodge Dance Team. With his growing love and affinity for scouting and for the Treasure Valley Scout Reservation, he not only attended camp, but became a resident camp staff member. The next leg of his scouting journey would bring him to the position of Assistant Scoutmaster. Expanding upon that he would become the Mohegan Council's Training Committee Chairman, earning him his third Woodbadge bead. In 1987 for his outstanding service to the Quinsigamond District, Jay received the District Award of Merit. Thru his excellence in continued service to the Troop, the District, the Community and the Council he was honored with the Silver Beaver Award in 1991. Jay's continued dedication would only skyrocket as you would expect from someone with over 40 years of cheerful service. He matured into the position of Treasure Valley Scout Reservation Camp Director in 2015, Camp Commissioner, Properties and Facilities Camp Committee Member. His unwavering service would continue in the role as Troop 37's Troop Committee Chairman from 2007-2020. He passionately taught scouts on various subjects and skills within the merit badge field as a merit badge counselor. Along with many of his fellow friends, he was a member of the Friends of Treasure Valley and a Life Long Charter Member in the Treasure Valley Alumni Association.

Jay also loved reading, talk radio of any kind, New England sports teams, and watching his grandson's basketball and soccer games. He enjoyed summers at the beach at Campers Haven in Dennisport. Jay will be remembered for his big heart, his great sense of humor and deep loyalty to his family and friends.

He leaves his partner of 21 years, Mary Jane St. Francis, who loved and adored him; his daughter, the "apple of his eye", Crystal E. Eager of Leicester; a step-daughter, Julie St. Francis and her children, Treyden and Rydyr of Dudley; a step-son, Joel St. Francis and his wife, Katherine and their children, Conner and Duncan of Hendersonville, TN and his buddy, Blarney.

Relatives and friends are invited to remember and honor Jay with his family during visiting hours on Thursday, March 5th from 4 to 7pm at the Callahan, Fay & Caswell Life Celebration Home, 61 Myrtle St. Worcester. His funeral will be held Friday, March 6, from the funeral home with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a. m Christ the King Church, 1052 Pleasant St. Burial will follow in Saint John's Cemetery.
