John Peter Richie, Jr., 66, of Hummelstown, passed away from glioblastoma on Wednesday, February 22, 2023, at home with his loving family by his side.

Born in Worcester, MA, on November 11, 1956, he was the son of the late John Peter, Sr., and Rose Schiavone Richie.

John was a beloved Researcher and Professor of Public Health Science at the Penn State College of Medicine in Hershey for two decades. He was at the forefront of cancer and aging research for over 35 years and mentored many graduate students, an especially gratifying part of his career.

He was a 1974 graduate of West Boylston H.S. in Massachusetts; received his B.S. degree from Worcester Polytechnic Institute; and completed his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Louisville.

John was passionate about cooking, gardening and hiking. But more than anything, he loved spending time with his family and friends.

John is survived by his wife of 33 years, Lin Zoeller; a son, Nicholas Richie of Hummelstown; a daughter, Marina Richie of San Diego, CA; a sister, Carol Vadenais and her husband Ed of Bellingham, MA.

Family and friends will celebrate John’s life with a visiting hour on Saturday, May 27th from 9:00am-10:00am at Fay Brothers Life Celebration Home, 1 West Boylston St., West Boylston.  A funeral service will follow at 10:00am. Burial will conclude at Mount Vernon Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 6704, Hagerstown, MD 21741, or www.donate.cancer.org.
