John W. Shugrue

WORCESTER-John W. Shugrue, 83, of Worcester, died Monday, March 10 at home. He leaves a daughter Andrea H. Shugrue; a son, William J. Shugrue and his wife Colleen; five grandchildren, Rachel, Brianna, John, Allison and James "Jimmy" all of Worcester. He also leaves Dorothea A. Shugrue, one nephew and two nieces. A sister Eleanor M. Moran predeceased him in 2002.

He was born in Worcester, son of William and Mary (Brosnan) Shugrue who were both born in Ireland. He graduated from the Academy of the Sacred Heart where during his senior year he was captain of the basketball team and named to the All City Basketball team. He later graduated from the Milwaukee School of Engineering. John was an Army veteran of World War II serving in Europe and received the Purple Heart for being wounded on January 10, 1945. He worked at Mass Electric for thirty years, retiring in 1981. He was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Church, the United Electrical Worker's Union 170, Disabled American Veteran's Chapter 4 and he was an avid New England sports fan.

The funeral mass will be held on Friday, March 14th at 11:00 AM in Our Lady of Fatima Church, 43 Belmont Street. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery. There are no calling hours.
