Joseph P. Chakuas, 76, of the Sunbridge Nursing Home 18 Hammond St., formerly of 173 Canterbury St. died Friday, October 25, in Saint Vincent Hospital-Worcester Medical Center after an illness.
His wife Arlene (Duncan) Chakuas died 1990. He leaves three daughters, Karen Hannah of Warren, Mary Mason of Spencer and Susan Klama of Worcester; two sons, Joseph P. Chakuas of Worcester and Steven Chakuas of Southbridge, three sister, Anne Chounard of Springfield, Helen "Nellie" Phalan of Barre and Amelia "Mildred" Welge of Miami, FL, 11 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and several nephews and nieces. Two sons, Kevin Chakuas died in 1986 and Thomas Chakuas died in 1995, and two brothers, Charles Ziemba died in 1993 and Albert Chakuas died in 1989. He was born in Barre, son of Joseph P. and Mary (Ziemba) Chakuas. He attended Barre High School.
He worked for Worcester Knitting Mill in Cherry Valley for many years, retiring in 1990, prior to that he worked for Wyman Gordon Company. He was a Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of Our Lady of the Angels Church. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed drawing.
The Funeral will be held Tuesday, October 29, from Fay Brothers Funeral Home 9 Hammond St.(www.faybrothers.com) with a Mass at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of the Angels Church 1222 Main St. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. Calling hours are Monday October 28, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
