AUBURN - Kenneth P. Bergeron passed away on November 23, 2010 in UMass Memorial Hospital from complications related to a stroke suffered at his home in Auburn. He now joins his loving wife of 59 years, Pauline J. (Elliott) Bergeron, who preceded him in 2008.
He is survived by his two sons, Kenneth P. Jr. and his wife Kathleen of Sutton, Paul D. and his wife Krystle of Worcester and three daughters, Patricia A. Falvey and her husband Robert, Paula J. Giangregorio, and Shirley A. Dee and her husband Gary, all of Worcester. There are 11 grandchildren and 13 adorable great grandchildren. He was the son of Katherine (Driscoll) Bergeron and leaves a sister Marion Mangiatordi of Worcester. A brother, Norman Bergeron and three sisters Rita Collins, Phyllis Madaio and Barbara Cabana had predeceased him. Several nieces and nephews live throughout the region.
Ken was born in Worcester in the Green Island neighborhood and spent a majority of his childhood at the Ionic Avenue Boys club where he was an outstanding player on many of their fine basketball teams. He also played guard for several local organizational clubs and was well recognized throughout New England for his play in various charity tournaments.
He enlisted in the Army in 1943 and went to France with the 165th Combat Engineers being seriously wounded in 1944 and spending the rest of his service time in Ashford General Hospital in West Virginia. He was honorably discharged in 1945. He was a lifelong member and Past Commander of the Vernon Hill Post in Worcester.
Ken was the acting Director of the Holyoke Boys Club prior returning to the Worcester area. He worked for the City of Worcester for 46 years managing several areas prior to retiring from his last position as Superintendent of Parks and Recreation. Ken, "Red", , also owned the Third Base Bar on Water Street and the Hotel Vernon at Kelley Square where he enthusiastically and successfully entertained his patrons for over 35 years.
His funeral will be held on Monday the 29th of November from Callahan and Fay Brothers Funeral Home, 61 Myrtle Street, Worcester, with a Mass at 10 AM at St. John's Church 40 Temple Street in Worcester with burial at St. John's Cemetery following. Calling hours are Sunday, November 28th between the hours of 3 and 6 PM.
