WORCESTER-Lenard E. Lauer, 81, of 7 Briarwood Terrace, Worcester, passed away on Saturday June 16 at Knollwood Nursing Center following a courageous battle with cancer. He leaves his beloved wife of 59 years, Catherine Jean (O'Brien) Lauer; three devoted sons, Gary Lauer and his wife Katharine of Santa Barbara, CA; Scott Lauer and his wife Darlene of West Boylston; and Len Lauer and his wife Beth of La Jolla, CA; as well as his eight loving grandchildren. He also leaves his sister, Beverly Smith and her husband Harold of Springfield and his sister-in-law Mary Elizabeth Lareau and her husband Andre of Enfield, CT.
Born in Springfield in 1925, he was the son of Lenard and Mary (Craven) Lauer. He was a graduate of Commerce High School and American International College in Springfield. A U.S. Navy veteran of WWII, he was later called back from the reserves to serve again in the Korean War.
Lenard began his professional life in 1950 at Dun and Bradstreet in Springfield and later worked in various management positions at U.S. Envelope for 20 years. He joined National Envelope Corp. in 1972 and led the integration of acquired companies throughout the east coast and Midwest. This eventually allowed National Envelope to become the nation's largest privately held envelope company. He retired as Executive Vice President in 1994.
He was a former member of the Worcester Country Club, Greendale Retired Men's Club and was also an avid bridge player and reader. He had a love of history and enjoyed visiting many battlefields and memorials during his life. He and his wife spent their time together traveling with friends and visiting their grandchildren and families. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service celebrating his life on July 16, 10:30 AM at First Unitarian Church, 90 Main St., and Worcester. A private burial will take place at Mt. Vernon Cemetery in West Boylston. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Prostate Cancer Foundation, 1250 Fourth St., Santa Monica, CA 90401.
