Leo J. "Yankee" Bernard, 68, died Saturday, January 7 in Saint Vincent Hospital after an illness. He leaves his wife of 46 years, Betty Ann (Bergeson) Bernard, two daughters, Laurie L. Clark and her husband Burton Clark, Jr. of Sutton and Amy-Beth Bernard of Webster, a sister, Claire Johnson of Auburn, a brother, Lawrence Bernard of Southbridge, four grandchildren, Amanda Reid, Alyssa, Andrew and Robert Clark, a great granddaughter, Amelya Reid, several nephews and nieces.
He was born in Millbury, son of Joseph A. and Edna C. (Gonyea) Bernard, Jr., graduated from Boys Trade High School and served in the Army Reserves. Mr. Bernard worked 18 years at George Meyers Manufacturing and 12 years at Astra Pharmaceutical retiring in 1996 due to illness. He was an active member of Emanuel Lutheran Church the Singletary Rod & Gun Club and was an avid Red Sox fan. He was known to everyone as Yankee, a name that originated from his oldest granddaughter and he loved spending time with all of his grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held, Wednesday, January 11 at 10:00 AM in Emanuel Lutheran Church, 200 Greenwood Street, Worcester. Burial will be in All Faith's Cemetery. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Emanuel Lutheran Church, 200 Greenwood St., Worcester, MA 01607 or to a charity of the donors choice. LINDQUIST LUNDIN FUNERAL HOME, 36 Butler Street, Worcester is directing arrangements.
