WORCESTER-Leon A. Cournoyer, of 63 Jennings St., passed away Wednesday, March 9, at UMass Memorial Healthcare after a brief illness. He leaves his wife of 52 years, Kathryn L. (Morey) Cournoyer; two daughters, Anne K., and her husband Stephen F. Johnson of Worcester and Joan M., and her husband Ralph W. Nelson, Jr. of Clinton; two grandsons, Patrick William Nelson and Christopher Leon Nelson of Clinton, and nieces and nephews. His sister, Rita L. Dubuque predeceased him, in 2004.
He was born in Worcester the son of Emile R. and Arthemise "Anna" (Bolduc) Cournoyer and attended Worcester Boys Trade School.
He served in the United States Army Medical Corps during World War Two in France, Germany, and in the Battle of the Bulge.
Mr. Cournoyer worked as an automobile master mechanic. He retired in 1984 from Gallo Motor Corporation on Shrewsbury Street. Previously, he worked at Kelly Buick. After retirement, he worked part-time in the Worcester Vocational High School as an automotive instructor.
He served as an usher at St. Stephen's Church in Worcester and also volunteered at its bingo.
Leon was a devoted husband to his wife, and a loving father and grandfather. He could fix anything and embraced hard work all his life. He was a talented gardener and carpenter and took pride in his family.
The funeral will be Friday, March 11 from THE CALLAHAN & FAY BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 61 Myrtle St. with a Mass at 9:30 a.m. in St. Stephen's Church, 357 Grafton St. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, Lancaster. Calling hours will be from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. in the funeral home.
