HOLDEN-Leonard R. Smith, 70, passed away Monday, June 11, 2018.
He leaves his wife of 49 years, Kathleen M. (Callahan) Smith; three children, Joanne M. Mrugala and her husband, Matthew of Holden; Kim A. Sullivan and her husband, Joseph of Worcester and Lenny M. Smith of Holden; the light of his life, his two grandsons, Matthew and Jack Sullivan; two brothers, Timothy Smith and his wife, Martha of Londonderry, NH and Donal Smith, Jr. and his wife, Janis of Worcester; four nieces and three nephews. He was born in Worcester and raised in the Vernon Hill neighborhood by his parents, Donald J. and Dorothy A. (Donnelly) Smith and graduated from Sacred Heart Academy and Worcester State College. Lenny was Army Veteran of the Vietnam War, where he served as a dog handler and was a Purple Heart recipient.
Lenny was the Athletics Director and the basketball coach for Anne Maria College for many years, before retiring, prior to that he was the basketball coach at Quinsigamond Community College and Holy Name High School. He was a member of St. John's Church, and a longtime member of Wachusett Country Club. Lenny was an avid sports fan of all the New England teams, but his true love was spending time with family.
A Funeral will be held Thursday, June 14th from Callahan Fay Caswell Funeral Home, 61 Myrtle St. with a Mass at 10AM in St. John's Church, 44 Temple St. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery. Visiting Hours are Wednesday, June 13th from 4 to 7pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Worcester Animal Rescue League, 139 Holden St., Worcester, 01606.
