WEST BOYLSTON-ST. PETERSBURG, FL-Leonard Smith, 87, of St. Petersburg, FL formerly of West Boylston died peacefully on December 31 in North Side Hospital in St. Petersburg.




Leonard was born in Worcester on March 9, 1920 son of Ernest and Elizabeth Smith. He leaves his wife of 64 years, Rita E. (Cormier) Smith, a daughter, Barbara Mard and her husband, Michael of West Boylston, a son, Richard E. Smith and his wife Mary of Lantana, FL, a sister, Lena Furey of Worcester, several grandchildren and one great grandchild, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, Robert L. Smith in 1981, two brothers, William and Ernest and four sisters, Lizzie Greenheldge, Bertha McMullin, Doris Smith and Alice LaForest.




Leonard received his Bachelors and Masters of Business Administration from Northeastern University in Boston. He was a Technical Sargent at the Army War College from 1943 through 1947. He opened the Salem, MA office of IBM where he was the office manager until 1953 and finished his career with Wright Line in Boston as the East Coast sales manager retiring in 1982




Leonard was a lover of music, played the piano and founded the folk group at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church in West Boylston where he was on the finance committee, a lector and cantor. He designed, made and flew model airplanes and taught Morse Code to Scouts of Troop 151 in West Boylston. He was a fisherman and a tennis player in his younger days and golf when retiring to St. Petersburg in 1985.




A Memorial Service will be held in St. Petersburg, FL later this week. A Memorial Service and interment will take place in the spring in West Boylston on a date to be announced.
