Lucille Doris Levine
Lucille Doris Pohley MD
July 18, 1946 to January 16, 2011
Lucille D. Levine died on January 16, 2011 at the age of 64. She is survived by her husband Paul after 40 years of marriage, by her two cherished God-Daughters Samantha Ryanne Doyle and Abby Elizabeth Doyle in Worcester MA, her brother William J. Pohley PhD, her sister-in-law Ellen Levine and extended families on both the East and West coasts. She has been a physician in both Worcester, MA and Los Angeles, CA. In her extended family on the West Coast, she supported David Jensen through the L A County Sheriff's Academy and his brother, Kyle Jensen through Oxnard College Regional Fire Academy and his continuing work to become a paramedic and firefighter while on the East coast assisting her God-Daughter Samantha through St. Michael's College in Vermont and a Master's program at Wheelock College in Boston. She was looking forward to doing the same for her second God-Daughter, Abby. Her patients were all part of her extended family and she treated them as she would a family member. She was the absolutely best physician practicing primary care in Massachusetts and when working as a Locum Tenens since moving to California, at all times with compassion and competence. In addition to her medical practice, she was active in her community, particularly the Assistance League of Santa Clarita and in the homeowner association where she lived while in California. Affectionately known as the "tree lady" for her work on the Landscape Committee during her early years in California, the past 5 years were spent serving on the Board of Directors of the Association and as the Board Liaison to the Landscape Committee.
She graduated from Malverne High School in Malverne, NY going on to earn her bachelor's degree in Physical Therapy graduating first in her class from Ithaca College and then serving on the faculty of both Ithaca College and Albert Einstein College of Medicine where she met her husband. Frustrated in the role of a technician, she went to Medical School graduating from Georgetown University School of Medicine with honors in Medicine in 1974. She did her post-graduate training at St. Vincent Hospital in Worcester MA. She then entered private practice in the same city with Dr's Leonard Morse, Robert Bessett and Stanley Kocot, where she continue to practice and care for her patients until moving to California in 1989. After obtaining her medical license in California, she worked as a Locum Tenens in both primary care as well as Occupational and Correctional Medicine until illness forced her to retire although she always maintained the desire to return to practice. She passed quietly in her sleep on Sunday, January 16.
She was named "Auntie Cele" by Samantha when she was born in 1983 and since that time, all the children she met would come to know and love her by that name. She absolutely loved being with her girls and taking them and their friends on many adventures. She had a strong love for the water and loved to swim. She spent two weeks each summer in Salisbury MA with Teresa and her family and taught several children to swim in the ocean during her time at the beach. She loved to travel and did so with her husband and family to many far away placed.
Lucille passed quietly in her sleep with Paul at her side on Sunday, January 16.
Her Funeral Service will be held Monday, January 24, at 10 AM in CALLAHAN & FAY BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 61 Myrtle St., Worcester. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, Worcester. Visiting Hours are Sunday, January 23, from 3 to 6 PM at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to either The Assistance League of Santa Clarita, PO Box 220145, Santa Clarita CA 91322 or the Physical Therapy program at Ithaca College. Contributions to Ithaca College should be sent to the attention of Elayne Nicholas, Special Programs at Ithaca College, 953 Danby Road, Ithaca, NY 14850.
