WORCESTER- Lucille A. Sullivan, 82, of East Providence, Rhode Island, died May 29, 2004, at the Hospice on Coes Pond, Worcester.
She was born in Worcester, daughter of Patrick J. and Isabelle m. (Butler) Sullivan and lived in Worcester until 1951.
She is survived by her brother James P. Sullivan of Westborough and Robert B. Sullivan of East Point, GA, a sister, Patricia R. Cronin of Worcester, 13 nieces and nephews, and 31 grand nieces and nephews.
She graduated from the High School of Commerce and the Worcester City Hospital School of Nursing, class of 1942; she received a Bachelor of Science in Public Health Nursing from Boston College, where she was a member of the first graduating class that included women, a Masters of Science in Education from Boston College and was working toward her Ph.D. She was a charter member of Boston College School of Nursing Honor Society, Sigma Theta Tau.
She was the educational director at both Worcester City Hospital School of Nursing and St. Joseph's Hospital School of Nursing in North Providence. She was a professor of nursing at Salve Regina College in Newport, RI and Rhode Island College, Providence, where she was chairman of the nursing department. She was a veteran of World War II, where she served a Navy LTJG in the nurse corps.
She was active in many professional organizations and served on the Rhode Island Board of Registration of Nursing and was appointed by the governor to the Comprehensive Public Health Planning Council in 1967 and reappointed for successive terms. She also published many nursing articles both locally and nationally. She enjoyed sports, travelling, and summers at Cape Cod.
Calling hours are Monday May 31, 2004 at Fay Brothers Funeral Home, 9 Hammond Street, Worcester from 5-7 PM. A funeral Mass will be held at 11 AM on Tuesday June 1, 2004 at St. Charles Borromeo Church, 341 June Street, Worcester with burial at St. John's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Hospice on Coes Pond, 10 Judith Road, Worcester, MA 01602.
