Madeline L. Murphy

d. July 1, 2009

WORCESTER
Madeline Louise (Morris) Murphy, of 40 Howland Terrace, died Wednesday July 1 at the Rose Monahan Hospice Home, Worcester. She was 92 years old.

Her husband Francis E. Murphy, predeceased her. She is survived by her loving daughters Maryanne Gelsomini and her husband Michael, of Gardner, Eileen Clark and her husband Steven of Hilton Head, South Carolina, Paula Murphy and her partner Michelle Brodeur of Onset, and her son John Murphy, with whom she lived, and his fianc%C3%A9, Abbie Averbach, as well as her beloved grandchildren Brian, Stephen and Cristin Chabot, Brianna and Colleen Clark, Colin Murphy, and great grandsons Aidan Chabot and Conor Chabot.

Born in Worcester, Madeline was the daughter of Ralph and Catherine (Galvin) Morris and sister of Robert Morris. She was a bookkeeper by trade, and she spent all of her life taking care of others. When her father died suddenly at an early age, she left nursing school to support her mother and assist in caring for her nieces and nephew, with whom she lived, including her beloved niece Barbara Hannon of East Falmouth.

After having 4 children in 6 years, she returned to work full time as a comptometer operator at Melville Shoe Company, and continued to work and support her children following her husband's death in 1977.

She was a gentle, intelligent and thoughtful woman, who spoke ill of no one, with the occasional exception of Rush Limbaugh and George W. Bush. She was an ardent fan of the Boston Red Sox, and rarely missed a game.

In her later years she benefited greatly from, and much appreciated, the sacrifices her daughters made traveling regularly from long distances to care for her, not to mention the loving companionship of her "roomie" Cristin Chabot.

Madeline was a strong person whose nature it was to sacrifice herself for the benefit of others. She was dearly loved, and will be greatly missed.
