Margaret was born on Achill Island Co. Mayo Ireland where she worked at the Achill Sound Hotel. She emigrated to the United States in 1956 settling in Cleveland Ohio. In Cleveland, she worked for the Stouffer’s Corporation and raised her growing family. She briefly lived in Wilmington, Delaware and in 1971, moved to Auburn ,MA.
Margaret and her family were restaurateurs owning the Irish House and The Emerald Isle Restaurant in Worcester.
In 1987 Margaret decided to enter a float in the Worcester MA St. Patrick’s Day Parade. She noticed a St. Patrick’s Day Card that featured a likeness of a giant leprechaun’s hat which had been sent to her daughter Sarah , by Sarah’s friend Patrice Cronin. This card inspired Margaret to have Frank Racki design a large scale model of the hat which eventually won first place in the parade float contest. A modern version of this hat today rests on the roof of the former Emerald Isle Restaurant now named Patsie Dugan’s, as an iconic landmark in Worcester honoring this great woman who shared her proud Irish heritage with the city.
She was a strong family matriarch and led an active life surrounded by her children, grandchildren, great grandchild, and her beloved Overhill Gang neighbors in Auburn.
Everyone who met Margaret was blessed by her warm smile and welcoming countenance.
