Maria Zongas

April 3, 1920 — February 10, 2011

WORCESTER, Maria (Xenos) Zongas, 90 formerly of Webster, MA died peacefully on Thursday, February 10, 2011. Her husband of 56 years George Zongas died in 2001.
Maria is survived by her niece Angeliki Douka, wife of the late Basil M. Douka and her great niece and goddaughter Barbara Douka-Efstathiou and her husband Sotirios Efstathiou with whom she resided with. She is also survived by Olympia Androtsopoulou and Petros Traiforos of Greece and Angeliki Kalfin of Australia and several other nieces, nephews and godchildren both here and abroad.
Maria was born in Istanbul, Turkey the daughter of George and Angeliki (Tsoflai) Xenos and came to the United States in 1956 and settled in New York. She helped her husband run their pizza establishment. Maria later relocated to Worcester and then to Webster, MA where she helped her husband operate V&A Pizza in Webster until 1979.
Maria was a member of St. Constantine and Helen's Greek Orthodox Church in Webster, as well as, St. Spyridon's Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Worcester. Maria was a member of the Ladies Philoptochos Society in both churches. In her spare time Maria loved to knit, needlepoint, read and travel. Maria was a gracious hostess an amazing story teller and always had an illuminating smile and laugh. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends. It is comforting that on Valentine's Day she will be laid to rest next to her soul mate and love of her life.
The family would love to thank Summit Elder Care and their entire staff for the exceptional care and service offered to Maria. Also, we would love to thank Darcy, Dee and Jennifer for all their love and help to Maria in the last years. Your devotion, love and respect was greatly appreciated and will never be forgotten.
Visiting hours are from 3:00-6:00 p.m., Sunday, February 13 at Callahan and Fay Brothers Funeral Home, 61 Myrtle Street, Worcester, MA. The funeral will be held on Monday, February 14th at 11:00 a.m. at St. Spyridon's Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 122 Russell Street, Worcester, MA. In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations are made in her name to the Zachary W. Kassos Ioninan Village Memorial Scholarship Fund at St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral.
