Martha Smilie

RUTLAND: Martha M. Smilie, 105, of Rutland, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 11, 2026, in the comfort of her home. Her beloved husband Stanley O. Smilie Sr. passed away in 1989.

She leaves her children, Stanley O. Smilie and wife, Anne of Worcester, Bettie Smilie of St. Cloud, FL., and Dawn M. Smilie of Rutland. She also leaves behind her grandchildren; Scott and Jeffrey Smilie of Worcester, David “DJ” Bain of Vero Beach, FL., Denise (Bain) Richard of Rutland, Jason Smilie of St. Cloud, FL., David Smilie of Martha’s Vineyard; along with eight great-grandchildren, Devin, Jordan, Desirae, Khylie, Kennedi, Leena, Carson, and Cheyenne.

She was pre-deceased by sons, James R. and Richard F. Smilie, and daughter Jessie M. Smilie.

Martha was born September 27, 1921, in Stevenson Ayrshire, Scotland to the late James and Catherine Marshall. She was a U.S. Army Air Force Veteran of World War II. In Martha’s younger years, she was a member of the Rainbow Girls and an avid bowler with the Auburn and Lincoln Lanes. She spent some time employed by Woodbury and Co. and the US Steel Corporation.

Over the years, Martha found joy with many family road trips around the country and bus trips to Foxwoods with her friends. She always enjoyed a good game of bingo or rummy, and if the Red Sox were playing - she was watching. She has left her amazing “Smilie” imprint with everyone who knew her and will be greatly missed and remembered by all.
