Holden/Worcester-Mary F. (Kelly) Slocum, 97, passed away peacefully on March 22, 2022.
Mary was born in Ennis, County Clare, Ireland on August 16, 1924, daughter to Margaret (Mungovan) and Patrick Kelly. After serving in the Irish Red Cross, Mary graduated as a registered nurse from Bolingbroke Hospital, London, England in 1959. She immigrated to the United States in 1960. Mary went on to serve as a nurse at Memorial Hospital, Holden Nursing Home and finally part-time in local schools.
In Mrs. Slocum's spare time, she loved volunteering at the reception desk at Briarwood, reading anything and everything, playing bridge and spending time with family and friends. Above all, she was a proud "Nana" to her beloved grandchildren.
Mary leaves many behind that will miss her deeply including her daughter, Deborah Slocum and her husband, Marshal Root, of Westport, CT; her sons, David Slocum of Framingham, MA and Jeffrey Slocum and his wife, Susan, of East Lyme, CT; and her grandchildren Benjamin Root of Brookline, MA and Megan Root of Cambridge. MA. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, George W. Slocum, and three siblings Ann O'Loughlin, Thomas Kelly and John Kelly.
Family and friends are invited to a celebration of Mary's life with a visitation from 12:30 until 1:00pm in the Fay Brothers Life Celebration Funeral Home, 1 West Boylston St., West Boylston on Sunday, April 24. A service will begin at 1:00pm followed by a reception at The Manor, 42 W. Boylston St., W. Boylston at 2:00pm Burial will be private.
