WORCESTER-Michael P. Sweeney, aged 59, passed away peacefully at UMASS Memorial Hospital on Thursday, January 14, 2021.

Mike was the son of the late Thomas J Sweeney and Anne Reardon Sweeney and was the youngest of 10 siblings.

Mike leaves behind his brother Thomas J Sweeney Jr and his wife Pamela, both of Worcester, brother Paul V Sweeney of Princeton, sister Judith A Lynch and her husband Charles of Uxbridge, brother John M. Sweeney of Worcester, brother James F Sweeney of Madison WI, sister Jane M. Sweeney of New Castle NH, and sister Mary E. Grundy and her husband Allen of Houston TX. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and a large extended family who loved him dearly. Mike was predeceased by brothers William F. Sweeney and David P. Sweeney

Mike was a lifelong resident of Worcester and graduated from Doherty Memorial High School. He also attended Southeastern Massachusetts University in Dartmouth MA. While at Doherty Mike was an outstanding baseball player and he also played for the successful Main South Post 341 American Legion baseball team. Mike was an avid follower of all Boston professional sports teams, particularly the Red Sox. He also closely followed the local high school and college baseball teams. For many years Mike was a fixture at either Tivnan Field or Foley Stadium watching baseball games.

Mike maintained strong Christian values and, as such, was a selfless, humble, and caring person. In keeping with these values he volunteered for many years at the Mustard Seed Catholic Worker in Worcester and he also sponsored many underprivileged children from Central America in order for them to attain a better life.

Out of an abundance of caution during Covid-19 the visiting hours and funeral service are private. Family and Friends are asked to gather at the entrance of St. John's Cemetery on Thursday, January 21 at 11:45am to join a procession for a Graveside Service at Noon. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Worcester County Food Bank at www.foodbank.org or to the Mustard Seed PO Box 2592, Worcester, 01613.
