Nancy C. Landers, 97, of Worcester, died peacefully on February 5, 2025.
Her family and others will always remember her as a woman of extraordinary kindness, selflessness and gratitude. She will be missed and remembered every day.
She leaves her beloved husband of 73 years, Worth Landers; her son Bradford Landers and his wife Barbara of Leesburg, VA; her daughter Andrea Tubbs and her husband Bob of Atlantic Beach, FL; her son Franklin Landers and his wife Carol Dwyer of Acton, MA; her daughter Judith Urbach and her husband James of Atlantic Beach, FL; and her four wonderful grandchildren, Matthew, David, Wells and Kathryn Landers, their spouses, and her five great-grandchildren. She also leaves her sister Marion Foss of Limington, ME, and Marion's extended family.
The daughter of George E. and Dorothy M. Chick, she was born and grew up in Limington, ME, where she graduated from Limington Academy. Nancy pursued her love of science, and graduated from the University of Maine in Orono with a BS in Medical Technology, and later received her Professional Registration in Medical Technology (ASCP).
Nancy was first employed as a Medical Technologist in Framingham, MA. Following her marriage and return to Maine, she spent the next two decades as a full time homemaker; she always felt fortunate to have this time with her children in their developing years. Nancy returned to employment at the Maine Medical Center, Portland, and after the family moved to Worcester in 1975, was employed at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center. She enjoyed her work in hospital laboratories, particularly working with microscopes in Hematology and Microbiology.
Nancy was a member of the First Unitarian Church, where she served on the Lay Leadership Council, the Environmental Committee, and the Memorial Garden Committee. She was a member of the League of Women Voters in South Portland and in Worcester, serving on the Worcester Board of Directors. Following retirement, she served as a volunteer at the New England Science Center (Ecotarium), where she especially enjoyed helping at the ocean tanks so children could see and touch sea creatures, and at the MicroDiner where she could show children tiny life forms through microscopes.
Nancy enjoyed planting and tending her gardens, traveling with her husband and learning more about the people and history of other countries, snorkeling along the shores and reefs of the Caribbean, and in earlier years skiing with her family and friends. Especially, she enjoyed visits with her adult children, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Nancy and her husband Worth moved to the Briarwood Retirement Community in 2010, where they made friends and participated in the many activities there. Nancy was a member of the Resident Association's Hospitality Committee, and staffed its classy news publication, where she utilized her superb writing skills to contribute articles on a range of topics. She also served on the management's Environmental Committee to create a greener community.
In lieu of memorial services, Nancy's widespread family will gather this spring to celebrate her life.
