Norman "Steve" Atterstrom

WORCESTER – Norman E. "Steve" Atterstrom, 91, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 2, 2018 at Beaumont Rehabilitation & Care Center, Westborough, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in and raised in Worcester, a son of the late Walter J. and Lillian C. (Lupien) Atterstrom. He graduated from Commerce High School, Class of 1945 and was a graduate of the Worcester Art Museum School.

Steve was a proud member of the greatest generation and willingly entered the US Army during World War II, and continued to serve during the Korean War. Steve then continued serving in the Massachusetts National Guard, retiring after 25 years as a Major. He worked for more than 30 years for the Wyman-Gordon Company at the Grafton Plant, working in Plant & Facilities Engineering and as a designer until his retirement.

Many things brought joy to Steve. An accomplished artist, Steve was a contributor to the front page of the Worcester Telegram & Gazette Sunday edition feature Parade section. He also exhibited many of his pieces in local art showcases, winning several awards. His ability to work with his artistic talents also spilled over into one of his other hobbies, model building. Building ships or setting up model railroad layouts became another showcase for his artistic talents. Travelling with his wife and visiting historic places via Amtrak tours or with AAA tours were other pastimes. Steve was a member of the New England Artists Association, the History Channel Club, the retired Men's Club of Greendale. He was also a life member of the National Guard Association, a member of the Worcester County Chapter of the Military Officers Assoc. the 26th Infantry (Yankee) Division Assoc., and the 181st Infantry Regiment Association, and the Chester P. Tuttle American Legion Post, Auburn. Steve was also an avid Red Sox fan. Steve always felt that the cornerstones of his life were God, Country and most importantly, his cherished family.

His beloved wife of 55 years, Glenice M. (Brigham) Atterstrom died in 2006. He leaves his six children, Jack Atterstrom of Coupland, TX, Joan Day and her husband, Warren of Marlborough, Jane Connors and her husband, Joseph of Grafton, Judy Atterstrom-Miller and her husband, Robert of Framingham, Jay Atterstrom and his wife, Laura of Plano, TX and Jeffery Atterstrom and his wife, Gina of South Dennis; his sister, Nancy Pakula of Worcester; his 13 grandchildren, Kenneth Day and his wife, Jennifer, Mathew Day and his wife, Lynn, Joel Day and his wife, Christine, Melissa McAllister and her husband, Sean, Kaitlyn Mitchell and her husband, Patrick, , Lee McKenna and her husband, James, Ryan Connors and his wife, Silmara, Bonnie Atterstrom, Rachel, Avery and Toby Atterstrom, and Caroline and Luke Atterstrom; his 11 great grandchildren, Madeline, Haley, Kelsey and Adam, Carley and Elin, Morgan and Carson, Miles and Mirielle, and Carson; as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his Pauline M. Boulay.

Family and friends are invited to honor and celebrate Steve's wonderful life by visiting with his family on Wednesday, December 5th from 5-8 p.m. at the Callahan, Fay & Caswell Funeral Home, 61 Myrtle Street, Worcester. His funeral will be held on Thursday, December 6th from the funeral home with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 10 a.m. at St. John's Church, 40 Temple Street, Worcester. Burial with military honors will follow in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. If desired, memorial donations may be sent to the Alzheimer's Association(www.alz.org).
