Reverend Paul V. Sullivan 84, of 45 Longfellow Rd. died Friday, July 8, at home.

He is survived by nieces and nephews and his good friends, James and Eileen Postale, with whom he lived. Father Sullivan was predeceased by eight brothers and sister: John, Gertrude, Mary Turnan, Catherine, James, Margaret, Edward, and Francis.

Father Sullivan was born in Worcester on December 11, 1920, the son of Bartholomew and Catherine (Marshall) Sullivan. He attended Saint Peter's Elementary School and graduated from Saint Peter's High School in 1938. He entered the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) in Lenox, Massachusetts after graduating from the College of the Holy Cross in 1942. On February 23, 1946 he entered the Order of Cistercians of the Strict Observance at Our Lady of the Valley Monastery in Cumberland, Rhode Island. In the Trappist Order he was known as Father Ignatius. He made his Solemn Vows as a Cistercian Monk in 1948 and was ordained to the priesthood on June 29, 1950 by Bishop John J. Wright in St. Anthony's Church in Fitchburg.

Father Sullivan became a priest of the Archdiocese of New York on September 1, 1973. He was first assigned to St. Catherine Laboure Parish, Lake Katrine, N.Y. and then to Saint Jospeh's Parish in Yonkers, N.Y. where he served for more than twenty years and continued to live after his retirement in 1995. He has lived in Shrewsbury since January 2003.

Calling Hours are Sunday, July 10, at Saint Peter's Church, 931 Main St. Worcester from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. A Vigil Prayer Service will be celebrated at 7:00 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Saint Peter's Church, on Monday, July 11 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to Saint Peter's Parish. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery.
