Philip G. Spellane

WORCESTER-Philip G. Spellane, Sr. passed away peacefully at home, cared for by his family. He was born in Worcester January 23, 1917 son of Philip J. and Hanna M. (Sullivan) Spellane and lived here most of his life. He was predeceased by his wife of 59 years, Patricia A. (Lane) Spellane.

He is survived by his six children, Anne M. Spellane of Auburn, Philip G. Spellane, Jr. and his wife, Ann Marie of Worcester, William J. Spellane and his wife, Libby of Holden, Joan M. Spellane of Worcester, Patricia M. O'Neil and her husband, Stephen F. of Worcester and Paul F. Spellane of Worcester. Also survived by 11 loving grandchildren, David, Tricia, Philip, Colleen, Lisa, Kelley, William, Leigh, Patrick, Michael and Sara as well as three great grandchildren, Brady, Drew and Philip and his first cousin, Patricia "Patsy" Fitzgerald. He was also predeceased by his two brothers, John and James Spellane.

He graduated Class of 1940 from Holy Cross College and was a member of the varsity basketball team. He received his masters degree from Worcester State College. He was a Navy veteran of WW II and was a teacher of electronics for the Worcester Public Schools for 20 years. He was a member of the faculty that opened Burncoat Senior High School in 1964 and taught there his whole career. He always took great pride in his varsity track team that he coached for many winning seasons.

In life he enjoyed traveling with his wife, late night cribbage games, reading, gardening, scratching tickets, "tinkering" and spending time with his family.

The funeral will be Friday, August 21 from FAY BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 1 W. Boylston St., W. Boylston with a Mass at 10:00 AM at St. George's Church, 38 Brattle St. Interment will be in St. John's Cemetery. Visiting hours will be Thursday, August 20 from 5:00 until 8:00 PM in the funeral home.
